SUMMARY:The Hand That Feeds - Cinema Politica Collaboration Event
DESCRIPTION:Screening+Talk: February 19\, 19:00-21:30 at the Marie Lokezaal\, \nTHE HAND THAT FEEDS directed by by Rachel Lears and Robin Blotnick is a powerful and timely story of undocumented immigrant workers in New York City who are fighting for justice and dignity.\nIn the bustling neighborhood of the Upper East Side\, behind the friendly smiles and fresh bagels\, brave workers like Mahoma López face sub-legal wages\, dangerous conditions\, and abusive managers. When Mahoma convinces his coworkers to stand up for their rights\, they embark on an journey with the risk deportation and job loss to form their own independent labor union. \nThis story of resilience\, solidarity\, and hope unfolds through a roller-coaster year of betrayal\, protests\, and legal battles. It’s a testament to the power of collective action and the fight for fair labor practices. With everything going on in the U.S. right now\, this film couldn’t be more relevant. \nWe’re looking forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Protestival
\nTickets op de Usva website: https://www.usva.nl/protestival/ \n\nYou’re young and want to speak out against injustice. Where do you start? Politically driven students asked themselves this very question 55 years ago\, and thus the Groninger Student Union (GSb) was founded. In 1971\, they campaigned for a better position for students\, against climate change\, and for international solidarity. How does the political youth culture of that time compare to that of today? And what’s on the agendas of student activists these days? \nThe Protestival kicks off with the book launch of Nait Soez’n\, De Groninger Studentenbond in de jaren zeventig – en wat daaraan vooraf ging -. Afterward\, GSb alumni will engage in discussions with current student activists. In other talks\, Rodrigo Gonzalez and human rights lawyer Jelle Klaas will speak about queer activism and the right to protest. Get involved in hands-on activities like crafting a political zine\, reimagining traditional protest songs with a modern twist\, and enjoying live music. You can also meet political student associations and browse the mini-market for books\, merchandise\, and updates on current student activism! \nThis program contains Dutch and English components. \nTickets on the Usva website at: https://www.usva.nl/en/protestival/
